The North Plains Neighborhood Food Project brings our community together around a shared commitment: ensuring that every neighbor has dependable access to nutritious food. As the number of families seeking assistance continues to grow, the North Plains Food Bank needs sustainable community support to keep its shelves stocked with the variety of foods our clients need. This project creates a meaningful connection between residents who want to help and local families, seniors, veterans, and children experiencing food insecurity. Every contribution remains in our community and strengthens the Food Bank’s welcoming, grocery-style shopping program, where clients can select foods that meet their household, cultural, and dietary needs. More than a food drive, this project builds compassion, awareness, and lasting relationships among neighbors while reminding those facing hardship that their community sees them, cares about them, and stands beside them.
How Neighbors Nourish North Plains
The North Plains Neighborhood Food Project makes helping local families simple, personal, and dependable. Participating neighbors receive a reusable green bag and add one or two nonperishable food item whenever they shop. Every two months, a volunteer Neighborhood Coordinator collects the filled bags, leaves empty bags for the next collection, and delivers the donations directly to the North Plains Food Bank. Instead of depending only on occasional food drives, this program creates a reliable supply of food throughout the year. What makes our project special is that every donation stays local and directly supports neighbors experiencing food insecurity in North Plains and surrounding communities. Even one item at a time becomes something powerful when an entire neighborhood participates. Together, residents build relationships, strengthen the Food Bank’s grocery-style shopping program, and help ensure families, seniors, veterans, and children have dependable access to nutritious food.

Our Neighborhood Impact
All food collected through the North Plains Neighborhood Food Project directly supports the North Plains Food Bank and the neighbors who rely on it each week. The Food Bank serves approximately 200 households—nearly 600 people—weekly, including families with children, seniors living on fixed incomes, veterans, people with disabilities, and individuals facing an unexpected hardship. Clients shop in a welcoming grocery-style setting and choose foods that fit their household, cultural, and dietary needs. Neighborhood donations help provide dependable pantry staples while stretching the Food Bank’s limited purchasing funds further. They also allow us to respond more consistently as food costs rise and new families seek assistance. By participating, residents are doing more than filling shelves: they are protecting dignity, easing impossible household choices, and creating a stronger community where no neighbor has to face hunger alone.
Most Needed Items
Peanut butter, canned tuna or chicken, canned fruit, pasta and pasta sauce, cereal, canned soups and chili.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors
There is a place for everyone in the North Plains Neighborhood Food Project. Become a Food Donor by adding one nonperishable item to your donation bag each week, or volunteer as a Neighborhood Coordinator and help connect a small group of nearby households with the Food Bank. Families, businesses, schools, churches, service organizations, and neighborhood groups can all participate. The commitment is simple, but the collective impact is powerful. Each filled green bag helps keep our shelves stocked and gives local families greater access to the nutritious foods they need. Just as importantly, participation sends a message to neighbors experiencing hardship: you are seen, you are valued, and you are not alone. When North Plains works together, small acts of generosity grow into dependable support that can nourish our community throughout the year.
